How to Fix C Drive Extend Volume Greyed Out Issue
When trying to increase C drive storage, the Extend Volume option is often greyed out or disabled. The main reason is a Recovery Partition located exactly between your C drive and the Unallocated Space. Windows default Disk Management cannot extend a drive unless the unallocated space is directly adjacent to its right side.
You can easily fix this for free without any premium third-party software by using the built-in Windows CMD (Diskpart) tool. Follow the step-by-step guide below:
Step 1: Delete the Recovery Partition
First, search for cmd in the Windows Start Menu and click on Run as administrator. Then, type the following commands consecutively and press Enter after each one:
| Command | Action Description |
| diskpart | Opens the Diskpart tool |
| list disk | Displays all disks on your PC |
| select disk 0 | Selects your main drive (change the number if your disk number is different) |
| list partition | Displays all partitions. Note down the number of the Recovery Partition. |
| select partition X | Replace 'X' with your Recovery Partition number (e.g., select partition 3) |
| delete partition override | Force deletes the selected recovery partition |
| exit | Exits the CMD tool |
Step 2: Extend the C Drive
1. Open Disk Management again from the Windows search.
2. You will now see the Unallocated Space immediately to the right of the C drive.
3. Right-click on the C drive and select Extend Volume...
4. Once the wizard opens, simply click Next > Next > Finish.
That's it! Your C drive space will be successfully extended.
Warning & Safety
This method does not affect your regular PC performance or files. However, it removes the built-in Windows Advanced Recovery option. If your Windows crashes in the future, you will need to use a Bootable USB Pendrive to repair it.
